Headquartered in Gaydon, Warwickshire, car manufacturer Land Rover is a brand of the British Car maker Jaguar Land Rover Group which specialises in four-wheel-drive cars. Since 2008, it has been owned by Tata Motors, an Indian conglomerate. After Jeep, Land Rover is the world's second oldest four-wheel drive brand, which, up until 2007, was owned by BMW.
Maurice Wilks designed the original Land Rover, after he was inspired by the American Jeep from World War II which he used whilst on holiday in Wales. Despite the current Jeep and Land Rover vehicles appearing visibly different today, they do still share this bond.
The name came from The Rover company giving one of their new models the name 'Land Rover' in 1948, which then expanded to the larger range of four-wheel-drive models (like the Freelander and Ran Rover Evoque) that we see today.
Land Rover provides military vehicles to the British and Australian armies as well as sometimes being used to transport the British Royal Family, and in 2010 it was announced by owners Tata Motors that Land Rover models would be built in China to reduce production costs and increase vehicle sales.
